Daniel Shattuck Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we report the death of our brother Daniel Stephen Shattuck on December 3, 2025. Daniel, who was the youngest in the family, was born on July 8, 1956. As the youngest he was called “Danny” by everyone. Then one day, at the age of 27, he asked us not to. He was about to become an uncle for the first time, and he did not want to be “Uncle Danny.” So his two nieces, Katherine Walter and Kendra Salas, and his two nephews, Eric Eidens and Luke Shattuck, knew him only as Uncle Dan or Uncle Daniel.  His siblings, Donna Shattuck and David Shattuck, eventually dropped the Danny moniker too. But his many cousins on both the Shattuck and the Gilbert side still lovingly called him Danny. So do the friends who knew him since childhood on Washington Road in Scotia.

Daniel graduated from Scotia-Glenville High School in 1975, and went on to Graham Junior College, earning an associate’s degree. He thoroughly enjoyed living in Boston and navigated the city by MTA to take advantage of all that the big city had to offer. He returned to Schenectady and worked as a camera man at WMHT before taking a job at Trans World Entertainment where he worked for more than 30 years. He was an important asset because of his institutional knowledge in a rapidly changing business. Daniel retired in 2020.

Daniel was a quiet man. He was content with his life and his home. He had no urge to travel but he would for family celebrations. He delighted in his nieces and nephews, and he attended all of their weddings, which required travel to Salt Lake City, Utah, Houston, Texas twice, and Seattle, Washington.

As his parents Donald and Mona Shattuck aged, Dan was the child who did not move away. He was the on-site support that his parents came to depend on. We came to depend on him too.

Although his siblings moved away, many of his cousins, the children of his father’s brothers, Robert Shattuck and Douglas Shattuck, and his mother’s sister, Arlene Gilbert, stayed in the area and in contact with Daniel.

Daniel suffered a stroke in October 2024 and only partially recovered, so he was no longer able to live independently. This frustrated him and, sadly, accelerated his decline. In this year he made a new friend, Tom Reynolds, who visited Dan regularly and made his life happier. We are grateful to Tom and for the care Daniel had at Brookdale Niskayuna. But we also know that he was no longer content. So we grieve but at the same time are comforted in knowing that Dan is released from the constraints of poor health and limited independence.

A celebration of our dear brother‘s life will be held at a later date.
